How salary converts to hourly in Australia

To convert salary to hourly, divide annual pay by 52 weeks, then by your standard weekly hours. We use 38 hours by default: hourly = annual / (52 × 38). Weekly and fortnightly are simply annual / 52 and annual / 26, while monthly uses 12 months.

  • Hourly = annual ÷ (52 × weekly hours).
  • Weekly = annual ÷ 52; Fortnightly = annual ÷ 26; Monthly = annual ÷ 12.
  • For part-time or different hours, adjust the weekly hours in the hourly calculation.

FAQ

How do I compare a salary offer to a contractor hourly rate?

Convert the salary to hourly with the formula above, then adjust for differences like super, leave, and unpaid downtime. Contractors typically factor in higher hourly rates to cover these.

Does this include tax or super?

No. This is a gross pay conversion. To estimate tax, use the main calculator on this site. Super is usually on top of base salary unless your offer states otherwise.

What if I work different hours each week?

Use your average weekly hours for the hourly calculation. For overtime or varying rosters, estimate an average or run multiple scenarios.
